You don’t have to take large steps to reach farther destinations.
At Layveer, we have moved through small steps over many years—one idea, one experiment,
one research finding and one improvement at a time.
There was never a single giant leap.
The journey gradually took us from an idea about Intelligence Reflex to research, from research
to the ERIF framework, and now from the framework to a working ERIF ENGINE.
So, what is ERIF ENGINE?
ERIF ENGINE is our evolving knowledge and AI reasoning engine, designed around the
principles of Ethical Reflexive Intelligence.
At its core is a simple but important idea:
AI should not have to answer from memory alone. It should first be able to access the
knowledge and evidence that we have deliberately built into the system..
Today, our engine contains 421 indexed knowledge chunks.
What is a “knowledge chunk”?
A knowledge chunk is a small, meaningful unit of information extracted from our larger
knowledge base.
Instead of treating an entire research paper, document or technical file as one large block, the
system breaks the information into smaller pieces that can be individually indexed and retrieved
This allows the engine to find the specific piece of knowledge relevant to a question, rather
than searching through an entire document.
So when we say 421 knowledge chunks, we are talking about 421 indexed units of knowledge
that the retrieval system can search and bring into context when answering a question.
What happens when you ask ERIF ENGINE a question?
The process is essentially:
Question → Search → Retrieve relevant knowledge → Provide context → AI reasoning → Answer
The engine first searches its knowledge base for relevant information.
It then selects the most relevant knowledge and provides that context to the local AI model.
The AI uses that retrieved information to formulate the response.
This means the system is not simply asking an AI:
“What do you know about this?”
It is asking:
“What relevant knowledge do we have in our system about this, and how can that
knowledge be used to answer the question?”
And where does the “reflexive” part come in?
The larger ERIF vision is to explore AI that goes beyond simply producing an answer.
It asks AI to consider context, evidence, ethics and risk as part of the reasoning process.
This becomes particularly relevant to surgery and other high-risk human–AI environments,
where the question is not only whether an AI can produce an answer, but whether it can support
human decision-making in a responsible and context-aware manner.
ERIF ENGINE is still an evolving research and engineering platform. It is not being presented as
a clinically validated decision-making system.
But something important has happened.
An idea that began years ago has now become a working knowledge engine.
421 indexed knowledge chunks.
Relevant knowledge retrieved in seconds.
AI responses grounded in that retrieved context.
Years of small steps behind it. And this is only another step in the journey.
You don't have to take large steps to reach farther destinations.
Sometimes, you just have to keep taking the next step.
